How to Choose Cushions for Your Sofa

Cushions are one of the easiest ways to change the look and feel of your sofa. Whether you want your living room to feel calm, cosy, colourful or more styled, the right cushions can make a big difference without needing to change your main furniture.

A good place to start is with colour. Look at the tones already in your room, including your sofa, rug, artwork and curtains. You do not need everything to match perfectly. In fact, a mix of tones often feels more relaxed and natural. Try choosing one or two colours that connect back to the room, then add a softer neutral to balance everything out.

Consider the colour and material of your sofa when selecting your cushions. For example, the Demi Sofa is available in a wide range of fabric and leather coverings, giving you plenty of freedom to create either a soft neutral look or introduce richer accent colours.

Size is also important. Larger cushions can help a sofa feel generous and inviting, while smaller cushions are great for layering. A simple combination could be two larger cushions at the back, with one or two smaller cushions in front. This creates depth without making the sofa feel too crowded.

Texture is where cushions can really bring warmth into a space. Linen, bouclé, velvet, woven fabrics and soft knits all add interest, especially if your sofa is upholstered in a simple fabric or leather. Mixing textures helps your sofa feel styled, even when using a simple colour palette. On a contemporary sofa such as the Harlow, try mixing two or three textures within a similar colour family for an easy, layered look.

For a larger modular setting such as the Malone Modular, try spreading cushions across the different sections rather than placing them all in one corner. Its flexible modular design makes it easy to change the layout and refresh the way the setting is styled.

For a more relaxed look, avoid making both sides exactly the same. You can still keep balance, but let the cushions feel slightly effortless. On a Tate Sofa or Chair, a contrasting cushion can be a simple way to introduce a new colour or seasonal accent.

The best part is that cushions are easy to change with the seasons. Light, fresh tones can brighten a space in summer, while deeper colours and cosy textures can make your home feel warmer through winter.

With a few thoughtful choices, cushions can help your sofa feel new again.
